How to Get Rid of Fine Lines According to Skincare Experts

Fine lines on woman's face

Aging is normal, but so is the desire to feel confident when looking in the mirror. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get rid of fine lines with insights from skincare professionals.

Fine lines are small creases on the skin that form before becoming wrinkles. While fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable, there are ways to reduce their appearance, including lifestyle changes, skincare products, and professional treatments.

What causes fine lines?

Fine lines are caused by changes in the skin due to aging, sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle factors like stress and smoking, explains Dr. Hannah Kopelman, a dermatologist at Kopelman Hair.

“I often tell my patients that your skin keeps a record of your expressions,” says Dr. Hannah Kopelman. If you have fine lines around your eyes and mouth, that’s a sign of life and something to be appreciated.

Can fine lines be removed?

Fine lines can’t entirely be removed or reversed. However, you can reduce their appearance with appropriate skincare treatment and lifestyle habits, explains Dr. Joel Kopelman, a facial plastic surgeon at Kopelman Aesthetic Surgery.

Dr. Viktoryia Kazlosukaya, a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Dermatology Circle, also reminds us that aging is inevitable for everyone, as are wrinkles. Instead of chasing every line, cherish them as beautiful reminders of the emotions and experiences shaping your life.

How to Get Rid of Fine Lines

You can reduce the appearance of fine lines with appropriate skincare treatment and lifestyle habits, explains Dr. Joel Kopelman, a facial plastic surgeon at Kopelman Aesthetic Surgery.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is one of the best ways to naturally reduce fine lines on your face. “When skin is well-hydrated, it looks plumper and smoother, making fine lines less visible,” says Dr. Hannah Kopelman.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using hydrating skincare products like hyaluronic acid for your face and a moisturizing body lotion on your skin. Oakwell Cosmetics Body Lotion is ideal for hydrating the skin because it’s made with natural ingredients, including shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil, with minerals and vitamins that help nourish the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

You can also try a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that binds water to skin cells for moisture, and you can buy it in a serum for your face.

Get good sleep

Have you ever felt like your skin looks dull and fine lines seem more pronounced when you experience a lack of sleep? Dr. Hannah Kopelman explains that this is because your skin repairs itself during sleep, which can help prevent and reduce signs of aging.

“Poor sleep increases cortisol, breaking down collagen and leading to faster aging,” says Dr. Hannah Kopelman.

Aim for at least seven hours of sleep per night, and your skin will thank you!

Be mindful of skincare ingredients

“We now have a variety of effective skincare ingredients proven to combat signs of aging,” says Dr. Kazlouskaya. The great thing is that you don’t need to use tons of skincare products. Instead, find a few with helpful ingredients and use them daily to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

The following ingredients found in skincare products are known to help get rid of fine lines:

  • Retinoids (retinol or tretinoin) - Derivatives of vitamin A that help produce collagen, a protein that helps reduce wrinkle visibility and evens out skin tone

  • Peptides - Amino acids that support skin repair for firmer, healthy skin

  • Vitamin C - An ingredient that can help brighten the skin and protect against free radical damage

Wash your face daily

Face washes contain helpful anti-aging ingredients, and removing makeup and impurities can help promote youthful skin. Clean skin promotes hydration, even skin tone, and a natural glow for a healthy appearance.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends the following tips for washing your face:

  • Use a gentle cleanser without alcohol
  • Wet your face with lukewarm water and apply your cleanser with your fingertips
  • Avoid scrubbing your skin, which can cause irritation
  • Rinse your face with lukewarm water and gently pat dry
  • Repeat every morning and night and any time after heavy perspiration

Wear sunscreen

“UV exposure is one of the leading causes of collagen breakdown, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles, " says Dr. Joel Kopelman. “Therefore, daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which can damage the skin.

“I recommend using at least SPF 30 daily. However, SPF 50 or higher offers optimal protection, especially if you're outdoors often.”

Dr. Joel Kopelman also explains that most people don’t use enough sunscreen and recommends using a nickel-sized amount for your face and a shot-glass amount for your body to ensure full coverage. You should apply sunscreen every morning, no matter the weather, and reapply every two hours if you’re exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period.

Avoid smoking cigarettes

“Your skin often reflects your overall health,” says Dr. Kazlouskaya. We know that smoking cigarettes is an unhealthy habit, and research also shows it leads to facial wrinkles.

If you’re a smoker, quitting can help your skin repair itself and potentially reverse fine lines and wrinkles. After one month, you’ll likely start seeing results, especially if paired with other wrinkle treatments.

Try professional treatments

There are many professional treatments that can help you get rid of fine lines or reduce their appearance, including Botox, laser resurfacing, micro-needling, dermal fillers, and a facelift.

“Botox is one of the most effective treatments for fine lines, particularly those caused by repetitive facial expressions,” says Dr. Joel Kopelman. “It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for wrinkles, preventing them from deepening over time.”

Dr. Joel Kopelman explains that combining Botox with laser resurfacing, micro-needling, and dermal fillers to restore lost volume can offer optimal results. These treatments can also be done on their own to help restore a more youthful appearance.

A facelift with a plastic surgeon is an option to help reverse signs of aging if your skin shows significant sagging, says Dr. Kazlouskaya.

Consult a dermatologist

While there are many at-home methods for managing and reducing fine lines, every person’s skin is different. For personalized support, you can consult a dermatologist

A dermatologist can help identify specific skin issues and provide professional treatment advice based on your skin and goals.

How to Get Rid of Fine Lines: Conclusion

We hope you found this article helpful and feel confident about caring for your skin. While fine lines are a sign of aging and often unavoidable, you can reduce their appearance with a healthy lifestyle, beneficial skincare ingredients like retinoids and Vitamin C, and professional treatments.
