11 Simple Bath Tips for Glowing Skin

When showering or bathing, exfoliation, soothing ingredients, and appropriate water temperature can help promote glowing skin.

1. Gentle exfoliation

“Before you take your bath, gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells,” suggests Dr. Kopelman. “You can use a sugar scrub or dry brush, but be gentle as over-scrubbing can irritate your skin.”

“Exfoliating with a scrub or dry brush is a secret to glowing skin because it helps stimulate blood circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and eliminates dead skin for a radiant glow,” explains Deanna Manganaro, a Medical Esthetician at RN Esthetics.

2. Use lukewarm water

When bathing, showering, or washing your face, use lukewarm water to prevent your skin from drying out. 

According to Dr. Kopelman, water that’s too hot can strip natural oils that can contribute to glowing skin.

3. Keep showers and baths short

Similar to a hot water temperature, long showers and baths can strip your skin’s natural oils, explains Dr. Kopelman.

Your daily shower or bath should ideally last five to ten minutes. If you enjoy taking long, soaking baths, limit them to once or twice weekly. If your skin is extra dry, keeping all showers and baths short is best.

4. Apply a face mask

“During your bath, take advantage of the warm, humid environment by applying a hydrating or detoxifying face mask,” recommends Dr. Kopelman. “The steam helps open up pores, allowing active ingredients to penetrate more deeply.”

Applying your face mask while bathing is also a time-saving way to enhance glowing skin for your face and body at once.

5. Mix skin-soothing ingredients with bath water

Skin-soothing and moisturizing ingredients can help nourish the skin and lock in moisture. Dr. Kopelman suggests adding ingredients like colloidal oatmeal or oils like almond or jojoba.

“Oats soothe sensitive or dry skin because they have many nutrients and anti-inflammatory effects,” confirms Sara Millecam, a Master Medical Esthetician & Founder at Lash Lift Store. “Essential oils can also benefit all skin types, but do a patch test first to ensure your skin reacts well.”

6. Use a gentle, PH-balanced cleanser

“Using a gentle cleanser that’s PH balanced helps ensure hydration and glow because it cleans your skin without stripping its natural oils,” says Manganaro.

You can also use body washes or soaps with natural ingredients made for your skin type. Dr. Kopelman recommends immediately applying a moisturizer or body oil after your bath while your skin is still slightly damp. “This helps seal in hydration and keeps the skin barrier healthy.”

“I suggest using products with shea butter or ceramides because they help deeply moisturize the skin. If you want an extra glow, using a shimmer body lotion is a simple way to enhance radiance.”

“Drinking water and herbal teas, such as dandelion root or nettle tea, can help flush dirt from the body,” explains Millecam. “This can help alleviate inflammation and improve blood flow, promoting a healthy natural glow.”
